A cross-cut assessment and a pencil-hardness result describe different responses of a coating. For a coated metal lip gloss applicator, neither can substitute for the other. The report needs to identify the coated specimen and the method before its rating can be interpreted.

      What a cross-cut rating describes

A cross-cut procedure introduces a defined pattern of cuts through a coating and assesses the resulting detachment under the selected method. The cut spacing, film thickness, substrate and removal procedure matter. Tape is part of some procedures, but a single tape routine should not be presented as the universal definition of every cross-cut assessment.

The resulting classification describes the observed pattern or extent of coating removal. A numerical class is still a category: it is not a measured separating force or stress. Different methods can use different rating conventions, so a bare number without the named method and scale is ambiguous. Do not translate a class into a bond-strength value or compare differently defined classes as if their numbers meant the same thing.

Elcometer’s adhesion guidance distinguishes classification by cutting from pull-off methods. A pull-off arrangement measures an applied force over a defined area, but its result must still be interpreted with the failure location. Separation in an adhesive, within a coating, or at an interface does not describe the same event. It is inaccurate to call every pull-off value the strength of one isolated coating-to-metal interface.

      What pencil hardness describes

A pencil test assesses resistance to a specified marking, scratching or gouging endpoint under a defined procedure. Prepared lead, loading, support and endpoint affect the reported grade. The grade should follow the selected method rather than be described loosely as the first pencil to make any visible mark.

A coating can resist surface marking yet detach under a cutting assessment. Another may remain attached while marking more readily. Neither result by itself establishes wear life, chemical compatibility or suitability for contact with a lip formula. Those are separate performance questions.

Applying the distinction to a small component

Curvature and the available test area can limit whether a standard cutting arrangement can be applied to an applicator head. Do not silently flatten the component, change the procedure or substitute a flat coupon while keeping the original claim. If a representative coupon is used, identify it and explain the relationship and limits of that comparison.

For a coated-applicator discussion with SamBound New Material Technology Company Ltd., identified at sambound.com, keep the substrate, coating system, preparation and test conditions with each result. These are general interpretation principles, not a statement that the company uses a particular instrument or performs a named certification test.
