An eyeliner that draws a clean line immediately after filling may behave differently after storage. Comparing horizontal, tip-up and tip-down positions can help a brand see whether the first application changes when the same filled pen rests in different orientations. The comparison needs a defined pen and formula, rather than a universal rule that one position is always best.
Keep the eyeliner format consistent
A pen with an internal ink supply and a dip-in bottle with a removable brush are different systems. In a pen, formula must reach an attached tip through its designed delivery path. In a bottle format, the user removes and loads a separate applicator. Results from one format should not be treated as qualification of the other.
Finished-product instructions can also be specific. For example, IsaDora advises horizontal storage for its Flex Tip Eyeliner. That instruction describes that product; it does not establish the correct storage direction for every eyeliner package.
Change orientation while keeping other conditions comparable
Use matched filled units with the same component set, formula, fill amount and preparation history. Allocate comparable samples to the three orientations and keep storage time and environmental conditions the same. Agree sample numbers, conditions and acceptance criteria with the development team; three orientations alone do not constitute a complete validation program.
Define how the cap is closed and how the pen is handled when removed from storage. Shaking or repeatedly drawing before recording the first mark can conceal a startup difference. Record any preparation steps required by the intended instructions, then use the same routine for each group.
Record the first mark and the subsequent recovery
Inspect the closed pack and cap interior for visible residue before testing application. Compare the first stroke, subsequent strokes and any preparation needed to obtain the intended line. Use a consistent test surface, drawing method and viewing conditions. A dark first mark followed by ordinary flow is a different observation from persistently uneven delivery.
Record tip condition and closure operation as separate observations. If mass change is measured, it needs an appropriate method and controls; mass change alone cannot identify whether loss came from leakage or evaporation.
Use a difference to guide investigation
An orientation-dependent result identifies a behavior to investigate. It does not by itself prove a defective seal, the wrong tip material or an unsuitable formula. Review the assembly, formula and delivery design together, and repeat a targeted comparison after any proposed change.

This dip-in bottle illustrates why eyeliner formats need to be distinguished. It is not a pen cross-section or evidence of storage test performance.
