A visible side-to-side movement in an assembled lipstick needs a defined reference before it can be reported as runout. The rotation axis, measured surface and extension position determine what the observation describes. A single side-view photograph captures only one orientation and cannot establish the variation over a rotation.

Choose the reference axis and the feature
Agree which functional feature establishes the axis for the check. The decorative outer shell should not automatically be treated as that reference, particularly where its shape or assembly differs from the mechanism’s locating features. The support must represent the agreed reference without distorting the pack.
Identify what is being observed: the holder, a cylindrical band of the bullet or another specified surface. A slanted or shaped bullet end is not interchangeable with a cylindrical measuring band. Its changing silhouette can obscure the radial variation being investigated.
Define height along the lipstick separately from the camera
Measurement height means the axial position of the selected band or feature. Extension describes how far the mechanism has raised the bullet. Keep both identifiable. Camera position, viewing direction, magnification and lighting are additional setup conditions rather than substitutes for that measurement location.
Do not assume that deviation must always increase in direct proportion to extension. A parallel offset, a tilted holder and movement within a clearance can produce different patterns. The observed pattern can guide further checks, but it does not by itself identify which component caused it.
Hold extension fixed during the rotation comparison
Set the agreed extension, then rotate the supported assembly about the defined reference axis without operating the lift mechanism. Track the selected surface through the rotation using a suitable, repeatable method. For a soft bullet, the observation method must avoid changing its shape while measuring it.
Keyence’s geometric-tolerance guidance distinguishes circular runout at individual cross-sections from total runout over a surface. A full revolution at one height does not, by itself, establish a total-runout result for the entire bullet. Any formal tolerance assessment needs the actual drawing requirement and an appropriate measurement method.
Keep operating behavior as a separate observation
Twisting the mechanism while watching the lipstick is useful for observing extension and retraction. It also changes axial position and may introduce hand forces. Record that operating check separately from a comparison made at fixed extension.
Retain the sample identity, reference feature, extension, measuring height and individual observations. Repeat at other agreed positions when needed; do not adopt unexplained universal limits or treat one photograph as a rotational measurement.
