A jar can arrive with powder in the lid even though the shipping carton looks clean. To compare two fill heights, measure how much powder reaches the lid under the same shipping and opening conditions. The result can change with the powder, sifter, and orientation.
Set up the two groups
Use jars, lids, and sifters of the same design and revision. Fill both groups from the same powder lot. Record the actual fill mass and the method used to measure the initial powder height. Use the same closure setting, seal condition, carton arrangement, and conditioning. Keep undisturbed controls so you can see how much powder reaches the lid from filling and handling alone.

Expose both groups to the same distribution sequence, using a procedure suited to the shipment. Balance carton positions across groups when position could affect the result. After the run, rest each jar in the same orientation for the same interval. Open it over a clean collection surface. Define ahead of time whether you will collect powder from the underside of the lid only or include the space above the sifter. Use the same weighing method on every jar.
Report the mass recovered from the lid and its share of the initial fill mass. A lower fill can leave less powder in the lid by mass but a larger share of the contents there. Keep separate notes for powder on the threads or outside the jar. The comparison shows how those two fill levels behaved in the tested configuration. Repeat it if the formula, sifter, or seal changes. The SamBound packaging catalog is available at sambound.com.
