A cushion compact’s outer latch keeps the case closed. Its inner lid closes the product reservoir. A satisfactory click from the outer case therefore cannot establish that the inner closure protects the formula as intended.

Locate the product enclosure
Identify the reservoir, inner lid, contact surfaces and any separate sealing feature in the selected design. Some seals use fitted surfaces; others may include an additional element. Do not assume every cushion has a gasket, the same hinge arrangement or the same closure geometry.
Confirm that the inner lid reaches its intended closed position without obstruction. Product residue or a displaced part can affect seating. Examine the selected assembly rather than importing a lip gloss bottle’s wiper explanation into a cushion design.
Check the outer case on its own terms
Evaluate release, closing, retention and hinge movement using the assembled compact. Check whether the puff and ribbon remain in their intended space. These are mechanical handling checks, distinct from measuring formula loss or leakage at the reservoir.
A latch can appear sound while the inner closure is incompletely seated. Conversely, an inner lid can close while the outer case has a retention problem. Record those observations separately so the correct component is investigated.
Then evaluate the filled system
Use the intended formula and fill in an agreed storage and handling plan. Observe leakage, changes in product condition and closure behavior at relevant intervals. Identify whether residue is inside the inner lid, outside the reservoir or outside the whole compact; those locations do not mean the same thing.
Shiseido’s instructions for a specific cushion refill note that product can appear around the seal, inner lid or sponge and that impact can transfer product onto the inner lid. That example is a reason to inspect the location and circumstances of residue, not to treat all residue as proof of seal failure or to transfer Shiseido’s product claims to another pack.
Keep component changes connected
Separate checks do not mean the two closures are physically unrelated. Check the inner assembly’s seating in the outer case, the effect of replacement if supported, and whether changes affect either closure. Repeat the relevant evaluations after a material or geometry change.
